DELL vs SONY vs HP vs Others

Mentioned below are the pros and cons of major laptop vendors :

DELL :

Legendary Direct sales model, favorite vendor for corporate houses due to aggressive pricing, one of the cheapest option for any given configuration and excellent customization

Pros :
  • Configure and customize as you wish
  • Just like an assembled PC, Dell allows its customers to choose the exact configuration they want and pay for only those features required. Other PC vendors usually release several pre configured models which cannot be customized beyond a limit
  • Relatively cheaper than competition for a given configuration
  • Only vendor who gives original OS media (With others you need to create recovery discs)
  • Available in Multiple colours (Inspiron Studio and XPS series)
  • Built to Order: Dell units are assembled only after an order is confirmed. This gives you fresh technology, directly from factory to your home. In other companies, products do spend some time in shelf, in factory, in warehouse, with distributor/reseller etc before you pick it up
Cons :

  • Need to wait for few days/weeks for delivery
  • Earlier you could not see and feel the product before purchase, however this is not the case now as most of their models are available in showrooms
  • Trouble shooting can be a headache if you’re a computer novice.
  • Strong up-selling tactics can make you spend more than what you originally budgeted
  • Other laptop dealers/service center staff may refuse outright to fix a dell unit or charge heavily for the service. (Reason being, since Dell deals directly with customers these people are loosing commission)
HP :

Quite popular among domestic consumers-Competitive pricing, good sales and service network, lots of features and occasional promo offers

Pros :
  • Lots of value added features: Like Remote Control, Fingerprint recognition, Webcam etc, not available in most of the competition models of similar configuration
  • Decent sales and service network
  • HP imprints can give good look to your unit (it is a sticker kind of thing with attractive images/scenery etc which you can stick to back of monitor)
  • Excellent collection of Accessories
Cons :
  • No option to make any changes in the specifications
  • Not so robust compared to Dell and Sony.
  • Very few models in high end segment.
  • HP gift redemption process is a pain

SONY :

Some of the most expensive notebooks available, used more as a style statement.

Pros :
  • High resale value and excellent brand recognition
  • Good build quality and attractive colours
  • Latest processors incorporated readily
  • Excellent screen clarity
  • Sony is the first company to launch flash based memory
Cons :
  • Relatively expensive
  • No option to make any changes in the specifications
  • Very few models in low segment.
ACER :

  • Sub 20k notebooks are available with Acer.
  • In the past, they lost to the competetion because they were lagging in specs. However, recently they seem to be doing better than/as good as the rest in that department.
  • Hritik Roshan has been commissioned to sell this brand and strong advertising is going on.Most of their products are extremely cheap when compared to other major brands however it may be prone to issues. I have not used any of their laptops hence will not comment much

  1. Please also comment on HPs snail-slow service. Service is a huge issue that people overlook.

  2. Hi There, I am actually a Technician at HP in India
Wat you call the off shoring or outsourcing or Wat ever.
Actually HP Directly dosent support customers....HP contracts their support to some third part Vendors Like Our Organisation which is " WIPRO" and its the Leading Vendor that handles HP SUPPORT.

If u Ask me, I would say not to buy HP in any near GENERATIONS ......HP SUKS SATAN's ASS BIG TIME
HP is shit and I am Sorry to use this kind of Language , I mean it

I will Share my Exp with customers Like you allll.....

Brand new computer just got it out of box not booting up (Disk Boot Faliure) GUESS WHAT HARD DRIVE IS MISSING in HP COMPUTER HOLY SHIT wat the hell
.........same situation on other occasion Hard Drive gone bad ...I said we would have to Replace the HDD Customer said R U KIDDING

I STUDIED A LOT AND CAME TO KNOW THAT HP PARTS ARE MANIFACTURED IN CHINA AND MEXICO FROM LOCAL VENDORS...HP DOES NOT MANIFACTURE THEIR PARTS ......SO POOR QUALITY ASSURANCE

    HP AND OUT OF WARRANTY
HP has nothing to do with you after the computer goes out of warranty and gives you only 1 year Warranty if the PC Crashes after 1 yr you are Fucked up alsoo HP dosent care to talk to you also unless u PAY for the SUPPORT and REPAIR FOR OOW PC would cost you big time

Many Customers call in just to ask some little INFO HP would charge $50 or 100 just for basic INFO

one day PC gets OOW and the PC crashed you r gone.

HP computer Crash Quickly Brand new PC Hard Drive Fail

    mostly Video Cards Fail

HP video cards suck big time

the above mentioned scenarios are nothing.....I came across many things Worse than that being an HP TECH

if the PC is OOW HP is done with the PC

I Think The above scenarios r enough for you to elminate HP
    from the LIST

I would suggest for buyers to buy PC which are cheap with high warranty.... In 2004 I bought a LG PC which had 3 yr warranty on it and it still works fine and Probably in US $ it would be some 500$

Luk for PC with more warranty
Actually Dell is good because Dell is the Manufacturer of their own pc so they have Control over Quality but not HP

I WOULD PREFER IN THIS ORDER
    APPLE>>GATEWAY>> IBM>>E-MACHINE>>>>>>>DELL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>HP

BUT IF ANY ONE OF THESE CAN GIVE YOU MORE WARRANTY YOU CAN GO WITH THAT PC
